Berries are rich in anthocyanins, antioxidants important in protecting the brain and the heart. Anthocyanins are what give berries their beautiful colors. Although strictly speaking, alcohol (with the exception of wine, port, champagne, and prosecco) is not part of a brain healthy diet, and alcohol itself is toxic to the brain in large quantities, alcohol confers some other advantages. It is a social lubricant, it encourages connection with others, it is part of rituals of celebration, and can have associations with positive life events. Many people are not going to stop drinking alcohol. So instead, I recommend drinking in moderation, and adding some berries and other nutritional goodies to your drinks. Here is one such recipe.
1 measure of rye whisky or bourbon
½ small lime
1 handful of raspeberries
- Wash raspeberries and add to a whisky glass.
- Muddle together.
- Add 2 quarters of chopped lime and muddle.
- Add 1 pour of rye whisky or bourbon.
- Add ice.
- Top with ginger beer.
- Stir and serve.
